First press conference since the historic observation of gravitational waves

Scientists from the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) and the Virgo Collaboration will discuss their latest research in the effort to detect gravitational waves, at the 228th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in San Diego, California. The briefing is scheduled to begin at 10:15 AM Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday, June 15th.

The installation of STAR (Southern Europe Thomson Backscattering Source for Applied Research), the compact hard X-rays source, designed and realized by INFN (Sezione di Milano and Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, with the collaboration of Gruppo Collegato di Cosenza), for advanced applied research in Materials Science, has started at the “Polo Tecnologico” of the University of Calabria.

New upgrade for ATLAS in Frascati

Atlas, one of the major LHC experiments, is starting a new upgrade in Frascati. In fact, the first of a number of detectors for small angle muon detection was successfully completed and sent over at CERN in Geneva. The LNF researchers, in collaboration with the colleagues of the experiment, have already started the testing on particle beams.

MONDO project – a collider for adrotherapy

The MONDO (MOnitor for Neutron Dose in hadrOntherapy) project’s goal is to develop a tracker for the neutrons produced from the beam of the patient undergoing oncologic therapy. The interest in this project stems from the fact these beams are “secondary” products, unintended, and as such their action is still little known and up for determination.

A scholarship for young science communicators

You can now apply for the Romeo Bassoli scholarship, named after this science journalist who managed the INFN Communication office from 2007 to 2013. The scholarship, at the INFN Communication office, is addressed to young science communicators, and will concern institutional communication and scientific dissemination. The grant is for six months, possibly extendable to six further months.
