Two young researchers at LNF won the Resmini and Vaccaro prizes

Two young researchers from the Frascati National Laboratory have won two prestigious INFN awards for their thesis work. Lucio Crincoli received the Resmini Prize for the best PhD thesis, awarded by National Scientific Commission 5, while Carlos Buitrago received the Vaccaro Prize for the best master’s thesis in accelerators, awarded by the INFN Accelerator Committee. Lucio Crincoli’s work is titled “Experimental and theoretical development of m-scale and high repetition rate plasma sources for plasma-based particle accelerators” (supervisor: Massimo Ferrario) and is focused on the theoretical and experimental development of high-repetition-rate, meter-scale plasma sources for particle accelerators, as part of the European EuPRAXIA project. Carlos Buitrago’s thesis is entitled “Dynamics Studies for Ultrashort Electron Beam Generation” (supervisor: Anna Giribono) and is dedicated to the study of the generation of ultrashort electron beams through an innovative compact compression scheme based on coherent synchrotron radiation. The Resmini Prize is one of the awards for the best doctoral theses that INFN assigns each year in the five research areas of the Institute, and it is named in memory of the physicist Francesco Resmini (1938–1984) one of the pioneers in studies of accelerator machines and applied physics for environmental and medical applications. The Vaccaro Prize is awarded for the best master’s thesis on theoretical and numerical research activities in the field of Particle Accelerators by the INFN Accelerator Committee. With this prize, INFN intends to commemorate Vittorio Giorgio Vaccaro (1941–2023), a pioneer of accelerator physics, who introduced fundamental concepts such as impedance and universal …

To Catalina Curceanu the award “Voci di Scienza, Voci di Donna 2026” by Radio Parlamentare and the Parliamentary Intergroup for Knowledge and Scientific Research

Today, March the 25th, our colleague Catalina Curceanu, director of research at INFN Frascati National Laboratory, has been awarded with the “Voci di Scienza, Voci di Donna 2026” prize by Radio Parlamentare and the Parliamentary Intergroup for Knowledge and Scientific Research, together with eight other representatives from the scientific community. The award “Voci di Scienza, Voci di Donna” aims to recognize the scientific and cultural value of women who, through their commitment to research, make a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge and to the civic development of our society. It highlights the quality of their research, their intellectual responsibility, and their ability to represent with authority the presence of women in contemporary science, at any stage of their professional path. “I am very happy and deeply honored to receive the award “Voci di Scienza, Voci di Donna”. I accept it with gratitude and with a strong sense of responsibility,” says Catalina. “I dedicate this award to the memory of my parents: even though they are no longer here, they continue to accompany me every day, in my choices and in the passion that I have for what I do. I owe to them not only my path in science, but also the deepest roots of who I am. I share it with my sisters and with my family, a constant source of strength and inspiration. As for the “Voci di Scienza” part, I dedicate it to the National Institute for Nuclear Physics and to the Frascati National Laboratory, …

EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB: Technical Design Report Published

Frascati at the Center of the New European Generation of Compact Accelerators With the publication of the Technical Design Report (TDR), EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB takes a decisive step toward the realization of the world’s first user facility based on plasma acceleration. The project, led by the INFN National Laboratories of Frascati, defines in detail the construction of a compact 1 GeV accelerator that integrates X-band RF technology and beam-driven Plasma WakeField Acceleration (PWFA), with the goal of realizing a Free Electron Laser operating in the water window, beamline AQUA in the figure, a strategic spectral region for applications in biology, materials science, and life sciences. The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, by INFN, and by a contribution from the Lazio Region aimed at the realization of an industrial applications beamline named ARIA. The TDR is the result of an extensive collective effort: 176 signatories from 28 institutes contributed to the definition of the project, demonstrating the strength of a highly integrated national and international scientific network. Alongside the Accelerator and Technical Divisions of LNF, which played a central role in the machine and infrastructure design, fundamental contributions were provided by CNR, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, ENEA, Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Milan, and the University of Rome Tor Vergata. EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB represents one of the two European pillars of the EuPRAXIA project, included in the ESFRI roadmap, and provides a concrete demonstration of the possibility of building more compact, energy-efficient, and scalable accelerators. The adopted acceleration …
