The first EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB User Workshop 2021 took place in hybrid mode with more than 140 international (from nine different countries) and domestic participants connected online over the two full days on October 14th and 15th, 2021.
EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB is the project of a FEL light source user facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) of the INFN in the EuPRAXIA (European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence in Applications) framework: the European project for a next generation plasma accelerator, recently included in the ESFRI 2021 Roadmap Update. This game-changing facility will produce versatile beams for a range of applications at lower costs and smaller footprint than more conventional radio-frequency accelerators.
The goal of this workshop was to present and discuss the target parameters of the EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB FELs, lasers and X-ray sources and to collect ideas from the future Users’ community about the experiments to be performed at these sources in the next decade. The workshop was arranged in four sessions, each one targeting the radiation property ranges, which may be covered by the facility: the low energy (7-30 eV) seeded FEL, the water window (100-400 eV) SASE FEL domain, the mid-IR and THz range, in addition to application using high intensity solid state laser and other possible radiation sources.
Round tables took place at the end of each session to open the discussion on this new generation of radiation facilities and collect ideas about needs and future photon science researchers to be realized from the foreseen new user community of the EuPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB. The first has been introduced by P. Campana that has clearly underlined the relevance of this project for the LNF, for the INFN and for the European Science.
