ATLAS is the largest piece of equipment at LHC, with a length of 26 m and a maximum diameter of 22 m. These dimensions are dictated by the high performance required of the equipment, which has the objective of a detailed and thorough examination of the processes involving the Higgs boson and the systematic study of the properties of heavy b e t quarks, which will be produced with high frequency in proton-proton collisions.ATLAS consists of a central tracking system immersed in a 2 Tesla solenoidal magnetic field, high granularity and airtight electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, in order to identify the presence of neutrinos from the energy imbalance, and a muon spectrometer utilizing a set of toroidal superconducting magnets and drift tubes able to identify the traces with 50-micron accuracy.
