The COLD laboratory (CryOgenic Laboratory for Detectors) is the LNF cryogenic facility.
It is equipped for measurements at ultra-low temperatures (down to 10 mK) and also in high magnetic fields (up to 8 T).
It is dedicated to the research and development of ultra-high sensitivity microwave photon detectors.
Lab activity includes understanding of the behavior of both copper and superconducting resonant cavities, also non-conventional, operating at frequencies in the order of 10-20 GHz, as well as the characterization of devices such as Josephson junctions operating in the 10-50 GHz range.
This kind of detectors would have wide use in the detection of light dark matter (axions).
