Sergio Ferrara (CERN & INFN-LNF), Dan Freedman (MIT & Stanford) and Peter van Nieuwenhuizen (Stony Brook) won the Breakthrough Prize 2019 in Fundamental Physics ” for the invention of supergravity, in which quantum variables are part of the description of the geometry of spacetime “.
The winners will be awarded in a ceremony on November 3rd, 2019 at NASA, together with the other laureates for Life Sciences and Mathematics.
Ferrara, Freedman and van Nieuwenhuizen are the creators of supergravity, a 1976 field theory that combines supersymmetry principles with general relativity.
Ferrara obtained his PhD at Sapienza Università di Roma and worked at CNEN and INFN Frascati National Laboratories, at CNRS, at Paris Ecole Normale Superieur and since 1985 at CERN Theory Division.
