DESCRIPTION: I will discuss the theoretical motivation and main features of the BSM class of models based on the  SU(3)_C x SU(3)_L x U(1) gauge group.\nI will then review the phenomenological analyses available in literature and present recent studies on the mass spectrum of the scalar sector.
