The search for beauty at LNF

Inner view of the Adone Building dome

INFN Frascati National Laboratories have always stood out for the special attention to aesthetic and functional aspects of the buildings hosting their offices and infrastructures. Aesthetic quality and comfort appear to be, indeed, key elements in providing a pleasant and stimulating working environment. Feeling at ease leads to an increase of self-confidence and wellness, factors to which productivity and efficiency are directly correlated.

The care given by LNF to the creation of a rational and harmonious environment was recently attested by the inclusion of two of their buildings in the “National census of Italian architecture of the late Twentieth century”: the Adone Building dome and the High Energy Building.

Specifically, the Adone Building – DAFNE collider’s “home” – is appreciated for the innovative solution in terms of roofing of a circular plan building, as well as for its peculiar continuous glass window, which allows natural light to softly enter without interfering with the activities performed inside.

Secondly, the census emphasizes the order of the planimetry and the organization of the different blocks of the High Energy Building, designed to host both offices and laboratories, besides the library and the auditorium dedicated to Bruno Touschek.

To the remarks contained in the census – available on the website of the MiBACT General Directorate for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Suburban Areas – one more positive note might be added: the significant presence of green areas with plant species native to the region, contributing to the general well-being in any kind of working environment, and – in the framework of a research centre – offers a suggestive encounter between nature and technology.

Undoubtedly, LNF fundamental scientific achievements do not depend on a well-thought scenography. However, if it is true that you should also please the eye, at Frascati Laboratories the user – employee, student or simply visitor – is certainly not disappointed.
