The dark side of the Universe – educational seminar

The 2017 Science Afternoons – an initiative addressed to teachers, students and general public – will conclude with a distinctive event, halfway between Philosophy and Physics, that will be held on the 4th of December at LNF. The educational seminar will begin with the reading of a poem by W. H. Auden and will go on according to a polyphonic structure: a scientific-philosophical dialogue between two physicists and a writer on the latest findings about the Universe.

The classical approach of Science Afternoons – which is purely scientific – will be reshaped through the choice of the dialogic model and a series of readings. The special guest Alfonso Berardinelli, essayist and literary critic specialized in poetry, will offer a philosophical and literary perspective about one of the most discussed topics of Modern Physics, confronting with two INFN researchers, Danilo Babusci and Fabio Bossi.

Under the direction of Vincenzo Napolano, INFN science communicator, representatives of the two world – that are too often seen as antithetical – will show the continuity between humanities and scientific disciplines when it comes to issues which are constant in human history, in particular the role of Man in the vastness of the Universe.

The 2018 Science Afternoons schedule is already being established, with new monthly appointments. These seminars, aiming at bringing society closer to the world of Physics, are hosted by the Laboratory and also live-streamed in order to allow remote participation. All the videos will be collected on the new web-portal AccendiScienza where they will be available at all times.

The edition of 2017, dealing with a wide range of Modern Physics topics, has been quite successful, with over 1000 participants.
