Thanks to the measurement made with the twin LIGO interferometers, the LIGO and VIRGO scientific cooperation opens up a new window on the universe, directly detecting the gravitational waves produced by the collision of two blacks holes. The Frascati National Laboratories have played a pioneering role in this type of research, hosting the first generation NAUTILUS experiment that constituted the starting point for the development and construction of modern interferometers.
